Lenore was a leader in her church. She was a past president of Presbyterian Women in her church and a Ruling Elder on the Session of her church: the First Presbyterian Church of North Kansas City. She took a leading role in all the church affairs and was recognized at the Presbytery level as a strong leader of her church. She was also active in the Philanthropic and Educational Organization (PEO) Sisterhood and was a past president of her chapter. She was also a member of Women's Auxiliary Board of the Salvation Army and took a leading role in the Team Table activities for that organization. Lenore attended North Central College in Naperville, IL, where she met her first husband, Donald W. Jacob, who was a 1st Lieutenant in the USMC, serving in the Pacific with the 5th Marine Division during WWII. Lenore was widowed in 1975. She married Myron D. Calkins, Director of Public Works for Kansas City, MO, in 1979. Lenore is survived by her husband, Myron D. Calkins; sons, Thomas K. Jacob and his wife, Joyce of Artesia, NM, and Donald Craig Jacob of Glendale, CA; two grandsons, Scott and Steven Jacob; granddaughter-in-law, Sarah; stepchildren, Susan Morehart and Dennis Lea of Westlake Village, CA, and Ronald and Janis Calkins of Oak View, CA, and Donald and Deborah Calkins of Irvine, CA; sister, Donelda and her husband, Lewis Matlin of St. Clare Shores, MI; and brother, Bruce McLean and wife, Anne, of Gladstone, MO. The Memorial service for Lenore was led by Rev. Larry Satorius and Rev. Dr. Elaine McRobbie. Rev. Satorius was her pastor for several years. Some of his message is below. "Lenore was a person who exemplified determination and perseverance; stamina and courage; concern and compassion; responsibility and devotion. Her wit and laughter, her noble values and principles by which she lived, her special ways of doing things, will not be forgotten. Lenore knew the importance and benefit of giving and sharing. Her personality, her many acts of generosity and kindness, has influenced the lives of many. In our tribute to Lenore Calkins, I am reminded of a quotation, which further describe Lenore's personality, character and life: 'The most satisfying thing in life is to have been able to give a large portion of one's self to others' (Unknown). Someone has said, 'Our most important possessions are our memories.' Mindful of that bit of proverbial wisdom, make it a point to tell, to retell, your memories of Lenore Calkins. Continue to celebrate your wonderful times with her." |
TRIBUTE
Lenore had many friends and each one would say she was always smiling. She enjoyed entertaining guests for dinner in her home. She was a gracious hostess and a marvelous cook. I remember one of her specialties was "grapefruit pie"....... and it was delicious.
Lenore liked to read and she also appreciated Bible study with her church circle. Lenore was my friend and I shall miss her. Corinne Brown
TRIBUTE - (excerpts from an article in the Dispatch by Linn Brown - used by permission.)
Her very personality was infectious and you found yourself wanting to be around her for selfish reasons. Sometimes, some of it rubbed off and you were better off for it.
She was a cross word puzzle enthusiast and ripped off the New York Times puzzle - the hardest around - routinely. She also, as a toss off, taught bridge.
She loved family, church, friends, and travel, and freely indulged herself in all four. These were separate orbits of her life which she managed without their necessarily intersecting.
